Course Description
Introduction to CMMI for Development (CMMI-DEV) , Version 1.2
Official SEI Three-Day Course
Overview
This three-day course introduces software and systems engineering professionals to Capability Maturity Model® Integration (CMMI®) fundamental concepts. CMMI models are frameworks that help organizations improve their ability to develop and maintain quality products and services.
The course, which has been updated to be part of Version 1.2 of the CMMI Product Suite, helps prepare participants to make valid judgements regarding an organization's implementation of the CMMI process areas. It is helpful, also, in identifying issues that should be addressed in performing process improvement as structured by the CMMI model.
This course fulfills a prerequisite requirement for any course requiring an official SEI Introductory CMMI course. Participants who successfully complete the course receive an SEI certificate of completion.
Intended Audience
Systems and software engineering managers and practitioners interested in understanding Capability Maturity Model Integration
Appraisal teams who will be using the SCAMPI method
Software and Systems Engineering Process Group (SEPG/EPG) members who are leading process improvement efforts
Course Objectives
Understand the importance of defined processes in an engineering organization and the rationale for process improvement.
Learn about the CMMI architecture (maturity levels, process areas, goals, and generic practices).
Gain a sufficient understanding of the CMMI Process Area components to serve as a SCAMPI team member.
Be able to apply CMMI principles in addressing the needs of software and systems engineering organizations
Course Topics
Introduction
Model-based process improvement
Process areas of CMMI models

Next steps
Format
The general format is lecture combined with class exercises designed to illustrate and reinforce the concepts presented, with ample opportunity for participant questions and discussions.
Prerequisites
Participants should have some knowledge of software or systems engineering and management, including exposure to quality assurance, configuration management, and basic management principles. This course can fulfill one of the prerequisites for SCAMPI training.
About the instructors
The instructors are SEI-authorized instructors for this course and experienced Lead Appraisers for SCAMPI appraisals. They have been helping software organizations improve quality and productivity for more than twenty years.
